An area very few are aware of, yet holds so much significance in the grand scheme of life on this planet. We take our name from the Makhonjwa Mountains, which form part of the area known as the "Genesis Route". A brief 45 minute drive from our brewery towards the town of Barberton, this area offers sheer natural beauty , yet it's not what you see that makes it so special.
Below the surface lies volcanic and sedimentary rock that dates back to around 3.6 billion years ago. It conceals some of the world's oldest microfossils and bacterial microfossils. The very early stages of life on earth. It also conceals evidence of immense asteroid impact and some of the world's oldest gold, which is still being mined today. The Makhonjwa Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage site and is therefore protected.
Our brewery was established in 2023 at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre in White River, Mpumalanga. Formed initially by head brewer Sean Jennings and his father Collin. Collin sadly passed away in April 2023 before the brewery was fully licensed. Sean now heads up the brewery with his wife Nasreen.
